Former club chairman Byron Edwards is set to become the new president of Mansfield Rugby Club when the 2013/14 season starts in September.

Byron, who was chairman of the club from 1984 to 2000, will succeed Alan Shaw, who sadly passed away in May.

The post will be for a three-year term and current chairman Andy Foster said: “Alan was only our second president after founder president Ted Lane, and we would like to see more people rewarded for the work that they have done for the club over the years.

“I’m delighted that Byron accepted the committee’s invitation to take the position as he will be the perfect ambassador for the club.

“This is a great opportunity for us to recognise Byron’s long-standing commitment and loyalty to the club as he has been part of the fabric of Mansfield Rugby Club for many years.”

Byron, who has also held the position of first XV captain and club captain, was thrilled by the club’s decision to nominate him for the post.

He said: “I consider being asked to be the club president a great honour and I very much look forward to the new season.

“The rugby club has been a very big part of my life for many years and it’s great to see the hard work and dedication that Andy and the rest of the club volunteers put in paying dividends.

“This really is a fantastic place and I will do my best to ensure the future success of the club with my total support.”
