Basketball: Giants’ young contingent making big strides

Mansfield Giants’ talented junior players have had a busy summer so far, with many members having been selected to represent their county, region and their country over the past few months.

Both Chloe Gaynor and Keegan Allen were selected to travel to Scotland and represent England at the U17 age group, Chloe for the girls and Keegan for the boys, with both players performing well.

Chloe takes the next step in her playing career when she attends the prestigious Barking Abbey School in September, where she will combine her education and basketball at the same time.

She has enrolled as an AASE student and will play in the WBBL for Barking Abbey, who are also the only Regional Institute for basketball in the country, with the club expecting big things from Chloe over the next few years.

Elsewhere, Ashante Richards, Alex Espin, Jack Halstead, Sam Adair, Brennan Geoghegan and Lucas Rigby all represented Nottinghamshire at the U13 age group with Richards, Espin and Halstead then being selected by East Midlands the Basketball England regional development tournaments in Sheffield.

Giants’ new recruits Amari Williams, Harry Warren and Kai Waller, also added their playing talents to the list as they joined Halstead and Espin in the U13 Boys East Midlands’ team.

From the U13 RDT Espin, Richards and Williams were then selected to attend the Basketball England FIBA camp in Worcester in August for a week.

Richards will attend the girls’ camp and Espin and Williams the boys’ camp.

In addition, coach Dan Richards has also been selected for the Performance pathway as he attempts to build on his coaching credentials.

James Allen, Harry Heathcote, Keegan Allen, Liam Burton and Nathan Halstead all represented Nottinghamshire at the U17 age groups with Allen being selected for the East Midlands’ team.

Chloe Gaynor was selected for U17 girls’ Nottinghamshire team and selected for the East Midlands squad and Kane Sanders-Bailey is in the U15 boys’ Nottinghamshire team.

Finally, Giants’ U11 players Ben Wagstaff, Megan Adair and Brennan Geoghegan all played for Nottinghamshire at the U11 East Midlands tournament, with Adair and Geoghegan then being selected for the East Midlands team.
