More glory for Sherwood Colliery, Sutton and Mansfield swimming clubs at county championships

An array of newly-crowned champions were among the swimming aces who heaped more glory on the Mansfield and Ashfield district at the final weekend gala of the Notts ASA County Championships.

Dozens of swimmers from local clubs, Sherwood Colliery, Sutton and Mansfield, competed at the prestigious championships, with the honours list again featuring Sherwood Colliery’s Olivia Barrett, who took the gold medal in the ten-to-11-year-old girls’ 200m breaststroke event.

In the same age group, Michael Senior, of Sutton, won a gold in the boys’ 200m breaststroke and also a bronze, while Keira Dobbs bagged two bronzes and Mansfield’s Hedia Marriott also finished third.

The 12-year-old boys’ age group continued to be dominated by Sutton’s Matthew Woodhall and Sherwood Colliery’s Dawid Sroka. They picked up more medals in the 1500m, 400m and 50m freestyle races, the 100m backstroke, 100m butterfly and 200m breaststroke, while Sroka’s teammate, Ellen Keigher, added to her individual titles with gold in the 12-year-old girls’ 50m freestyle.

In the 13-year-olds’ age group, Hollie-Mae Dove and Chloe Quinn boosted the Sutton medal haul with the former taking gold in the 200m breaststroke and both bagging bronzes. While the Sherwood Colliery trio of Rebecca Fisher (silver), Gracie Clifton (silver) and Joseph Sadler (bronze) were also among the medals.

Sherwood’s Adam Pring also took silver and bronze, and in the same 14-year-old boys’ age group, Bailey Ward won a bronze and Sutton’s Ellis Mason and Joshua Leeson took silver and bronze respectively.

In the 15-and-over age group, Mansfield’s Rhys Taylor led the charge with two golds (1500m and 400m freestyle), a silver and bronze, closely followed by Sherwood Colliery’s Jade Young with a gold (200m individual medley), two silvers and a bronze, and Sutton’s Russ Golubs with a gold (100m butterfly), silver and bronze.

Also for Sutton, Nevie Fergie won three silvers, Lauren Quinn and Jim Fergie won a silver apiece and Mia Fergie took two bronzes. And for Mansfield, there was double gold (men’s multi-disability 50m freestyle and 100m backstroke) for Benjamin Rees, plus bronzes for Charlotte Baguley and Summer Kennedy.

Overall age-group champions were also decided, with Sherwood Colliery’s Lily Boseley and Sutton’s Matthew Woodhall coming out on top. Runners-up were Sherwood duo Dawid Sroka and Rebecca Fisher and Sutton pair Neve Fergie and Russ Golubs.
