More glory for Mansfield Harriers’ Mark

On Saturday, Mansfield Harriers headed for Sutton Park where the British Masters Road Relay Championships was being hosted on what turned out to be the hottest day of the year so far.

Harriers fielded both men’s and women’s teams, which were slightly weakened due to various injuries sustained during the London Marathon to several athletes.

Nevertheless, both teams ran very impressively in conditions made more difficult due to the heat.

Once again, ‘Super Vet’ Mark Johnson showed his undoubted quality by posting the second fastest overall time for the 5km course in a time of 15:09 to secure another National Championship silver medal.

Other times were – Women: Maddie Collinge 24:13, Carly Johnson 20:44, Sue Bellingham 24:42, Amanda Shaw 25:38. Men: Mark Johnson 15:09, Andy Wilson 17:15, Chris Allcock 18:23, Carl Emery 18:13, Dave Robertson 20:07, Dave Ward 21:07.

This was enough for the men’s team to finish a credible 23rd from the 43 teams.

Another notable club performance was in the Bupa Great Manchester 10km, where Mansfield Harriers’ Gary Morley, also still below par following the London Marathon, came home in 308th position from close to 40,000 starters, with a time of 40:14.
