McNeil demolishes field to make top eight in the UK

A phenomenal performance from Lauren McNeil was the highlight of a superb night for Mansfield Harriers athletes at the second open meeting of the season staged by Charnwood Athletics Club at Loughborough University.

Defying strong winds and unseasonably cold weather, McNeil demolished her previous best time in the 1500m to win in four minutes, 41.64 seconds, which ranks her in the top eight of the UK.

McNeil and teammate Amber Scott had a battle royal through the race, with the lead swapping hands several imes. Scott finished close behind in 4.43.75, which was close to her own personal best (PB).

In the opening race of the night, U13 Beth Hamilton produced an amazing piece of front-running to win a five-second PB time of 5.17, while Matt Young chased hard on his debut at this distance to clock 5.23.

Isabelle Burlington was the fastest U13 girl over 100m, winning her heat in 14.01, while other notable sprint perfortmances came from Martin White, who ran a swift 12.35 for the 100m and 25.08 for the 200m, and Ellie Sheppard, who won her 100m heat in 13.63.

Harriers had lots of interest in the 800m heats, most notably from Ruby Milnes, who launched a ferocious kick at the 600m mark to record a three-second PB of 2.42. Alex Foster also took a second of her previous best to finish in 2.33.74, while Cole Beck shaved four seconds off his PB for a time of 2.22 and Chris Monk stormed home to win by 50 metres.
