MAN v FAT does great work supporting men to improve their health through football, while building confidence and a proper sense of community. Out of that environment, the idea for something new in Mansfield started to grow.
The aim was straightforward. Create a place where lads can turn up, play football and feel welcome. No pressure. No judgement. Just a good group of people and a ball.
The club is open to men of all abilities, with sessions running every Wednesday and Friday at The Joseph Whittaker School, and anyone is welcome.
Alongside the weekly kickabouts, Mansfield Mind FC also organises 11 a side games every week or so against other like minded local clubs. These matches give players the chance to represent the badge in a proper fixture, without losing the values the club was built on.
Off the pitch, the sense of community is just as important. The club runs a WhatsApp community where sessions and social activities are organised. It has quickly become a space where lads check in on each other, have a laugh and sometimes speak honestly about how they are feeling.
Several members have spoken openly about difficult periods in their lives, including serious breakdowns. More than one has said that being part of this group has helped them in ways they did not expect, and in some cases more than previous counselling.
On 1st March, the club played its first official game. The original opposition pulled out late, but with the numbers available it made sense to turn it into an inter squad friendly and make a day of it. It was a proud moment for everyone involved, and a reminder of how far the club has come in just a couple of months.
Mansfield Mind FC is there for any lad who wants to get involved. Whether you are having a tough time, looking to meet new people, or simply want a regular game without the pressure that can come with organised football, there is a place for you.
If you would like to join us, find Mansfield Mind FC on Facebook (www.facebook.com/mansfieldmindfc) or email [email protected] for more information. You do not need to commit to anything long term. Join the group, meet the lads and see what it is about.
Dom Helley said: “Seeing Mansfield Mind FC grow into what it is in such a short space of time has been incredibly rewarding. From the start, the goal was to create something that gives lads a bit of time away from the pressures of everyday life, somewhere they can enjoy football, make new friends, and feel part of a supportive group. It’s quickly become much more than just a team, it’s a real community.”
