Mansfield Harriers bring home impressive medal haul

Mansfield Harriers claimed four medals at the Midland U15 and U17 Championships, combined with the U13 Quadrathlon, at the weekend.

eading the way for the club was Luke Duffy, who took gold in the U17 3000 metres.

In his first attempt at the distance this year he dominated the race, which was a tactical affair for the first 2k but a last 1000 metres in 2.55 was enough to split the field and take the honours.

Tania Smith battled all day in the U13 Quadrathlon, a points scoring based competition which involved competing in the high jump, long jump, shot and 100 metres.

After clearing 1.26 metres in the high jump, 4.33 metres in the long jump, 8.68 metres in the shot it was all down to a shootout in the 100 metres with her closest rival from Birchfield Harriers.

Remaining calm Tania produced a 14.30 100 metres to record the fastest time of the day and in doing so take the title.

Chloe Allcock continued her fine season clearing 1.60 metres to take a silver in the U15 High Jump and Kelsey Pearce was superb in the U15 Shot as she took bronze with 10.55 metres only missing out on silver on countback. She followed that by coming fourth in the discus.

May Roberts had her best run of the season to agonisingly finish fourth in the U17 1500 metres and Jess Lake produced a fast 12.67 in a very competitive 75 metres Hurdles.

Five athletes competed at the Trafford open meeting last Tuesday night and the highlight was Bethany Williams’ stunning 800 metres run.

Williams has gone from strength to strength this season and produced another massive new best in the 800 metres, crossing the line in 2.11.01 in far from ideal conditions.

Luke Duffy continued his fine season clocking 4.01 and May Roberts ran a season’s best of 5.00 in the 1500 metres.

Cameron Walker ran another sub 2 minute 800 and Chris Monk looked superb throughout his race only to be both tripped and impeded in the home straight, but still came away with 1.54.18.

A frustrated Monk then travelled to Sheffield the next night to record a seasons best of 1.53.66.

On the roads last week the last of the Booths road race series took place at Shipley Park.

In a field of 190 men the first home for Mansfield was Phil Shaw, who came home in a fine 30th position to get him overall second in theover 50.

Nigel Watkin was the other male prize winner, finishing 55th on the night and third over 50 overall.

Gary Morley came in between Shaw and Watkin in 50th position and was followed by Steve Davies 61st, Martin Fickling 62nd, Jack Cooke 63rd, Gary Towle 103rd and Tim Richardson 155th.

First, out of 99 runners, for Mansfield was Beverley Armstrong in 13th, followed by Maddy Collinge 53rd, Jackie Duers 57th and Jemma Arbon 65th.

For good measure the ever consistent Collinge also came overall second in the over 65 ladies category.

The men’s team finished eighth on the night and seventh overall, the ladies ninth on the night and 12th overall and combined the Mansfield team were ninth on the night and seventh overall.

Seven Mansfield athletes competed in the Newark Half marathon which incorporated the County Championships.

Maddy Collinge completed the course in 1.50.46 which also made her over 65 county champion.

First home was Martin Fickling in 1.33.37 followed by Tony Gelsthorpe 1.37, Jack Cooke 1.37.42, Garry Hodgkins 1.43.49, Craig Linacre 1.58.50 and Jemma Arbon completed the team in 2.05.09.
