Mansfield Giants crushed by Derby Trailblazers

Mansfield Giants suffered a crushing 79-42 defeat to local rivals and championship contenders Derby Trailblazers in front of a full house at the Oak Tree Leisure Centre on Saturday.

Some sharp shooting from the Trailblazers gave them an early lead and they never looked back as the Giants struggled to break the pressure defence. Derby won the first period 21-12.

The Giants stepped up their defensive intensity to stop the outside threat of the Trailblazers, but a lack of offensive fire power meant the Giants still struggled to put the ball in the basket. The Trailblazers now went into the half-time break with a 12 point lead.

An outstanding defensive effort by the Trailblazers showed why they are in the mix for the EBL Division 2 title championship.

They kept the Giants to just six points in the third period, and scored a massive 27 to effectively take the game away from the Giants.

Derby rested their starting five in the final period but still won the quarter 16-10 to take a massive 37 point win.

The Giants travel away to face Ipswich Basketball on Saturday. Ipswich took a six point win when the two teams last faced each other back in December.
