But she is hoping to attract sponsorship because as she becomes more and more successful, she finds it increasingly hard to pay for her travel, training and equipment costs.

The 22-year-old Bailey, of Hill Crescent, is a multiple karate champion and medal-winner, both at home and abroad, and also a regular member of the England team. She has not looked back since she first joined Mansfield Karate Club at the age of eight and achieved her black belt 1st dan only five years later before her black belt 2nd dan aged 16. She still trains at the club with leading coach Dave Allsop.

However, annual expenditure runs well into four figures, and for this year’s world championships, to be held on the Dutch Caribbean island of Curacao in October, her flights alone will cost £970.

The last time, she tackled the worlds, in Texas in 2011, she received welcome support from Mansfield’s Armchair Club. But most of the time, she has to fund everything herself, which means working 70 hours a week in her job with the charity, Mencap, supporting adults who have learning disabilities and autism.

“Fitting all that in with my training is really difficult,” says Bailey. “I would be so grateful for any kind of funding.”

Any businesses or individuals interested in offering help can reach Bailey via her Facebook page, her GoFundMe page or by e-mail at [email protected]
