Jordan Boam seals junior county honours for Mansfield Harriers

Mansfield Harriers competed on the roads last week with another large turnout this time for the Newstead Abbey Dash an event in the grounds of the Abbey over a distance of 5k which this year also doubled up as the road county championships.

The much improved Jordan Boam confirmed his recent improvement finishing 10th in 17.04 and May Roberts came 61st in 20.21 to both take the junior county honours.

First home for the club on the night was middle distance star Chris Brown looking to use the run as an over distance race and he finished eighth in a time of 16.57.

Several athletes saw some big improvements over the distance none more so than Jade Bacon who improved her best by a massive five minutes to record a superb 21.30.

Alan Kemp continues his fine run of form improving to 20.05 and will be looking to dip under the 20 minute barrier very soon.

Jo Walker improved her 5K best by over a minute and ran two minutes faster than last year to record 26.04.

Latia Renshaw broke 30 minutes for the first time to cross the finish line in a new best time of 28.52.

One of the club’s next generation of distance runners Henry Bullough still an Under 13 finished in a very promising 19.14.

Jonny Lowe came home in an impressive 17.52 followed by Jack Cooke 20.26, Gary Towle 21.26, Bev Armstrong 21.34, Alan Armstrong 23.33, Jackie Duers 24.42, Tim Richardson 24.53, Jemma Arbon 25.36, Julia Lowe 26.12, Denise Winfield 27.47, Theresa Copcutt 30.58, Sally Wilson 31.22, Jane Walker 32.48 and Helen Netherwood 36.05.

The Mansfield club have also been busy on the track with five athletes competing over 1500 metres at the Watford open meeting last Wednesday.

Luke Duffy has been on fire recently and continued his scintillating form breaking the four minute barrier for the first time recording 3.57.77.

This time puts Duffy fifth in the UK U17 rankings this year and confirms his position as the fastest school year 10 athlete in the country.

Archie Rayner ran seven seconds faster than last week to clock 3.54.73 and is now returning quickly to his best after a calf injury.

Cameron Walker continues to improve quickly just missing out on being the third Mansfield athlete to go under four minutes in the same race recording a five second new best of 4.00.35.

Bethany Williams continued her fine form and a week after gaining her first international vest recorded a time of 4.37.01 a fantastic new best time by over four seconds.

The quintet was made up of May Roberts who was running superbly and on for a big new best time but with 450 metres to run the girl in front fell and May was taken down as well. Picking herself up she recoded 5.04 a fraction outside her seasons best.

In club competition the Juniors recently competed at the final Youth Development League fixture at Grantham.

Once again the girls dominated however being a mixed competition the lack of boys competing means the club will have to stay in the same division for another year. The solitary boy competing on the day was Henry Bullough winning the 75 metre hurdles and coming second in the high jump.

For the girls in the U15 age group Kelly Seaman had a welcome return after injury competing in both the 300 recording 50.1 and the 4 x 300 metre relay. Kelsey Pearce took maximum points from all her events winning the Javelin with a PB of 32.50 metres the Hammer with a PB 23.35 the Shot with 10.05 and also helped the 4x100 relay to victory too.

Chloe Allcock moved further up the UK rankings with a new PB in the High Jump 1.63 and also went on to win the B 100 in 13.8 and B Discus with 13.04.

Sophia Stewart won the A string 100m in a time of 12.9 the 300m in 43.6 and finished third in the Long Jump with 4.55. Jessica Lake came third in the A 75m Hurdles in 13.0 2nd in the A Discus with 15.73 and the 800 metres.

Holly-May Spencer ran her best race to date beating her PB by four seconds running the 800 in 2.37.8 and also came third in the B Hurdles.

Libby Bell added just over four metres to her PB in the Hammer winning the B with a distance of 21.27 also winning the B Javelin with 22.77 and came 2nd in the B 200. Katie Kemp managed a PB in the Shot with 8.27 and in doing so won the B event day,

Kemp also came second in the B High Jump with 1.35 and ran 29.7 in the 200m for fifth.

At U13 Tania Smith came second in the hurdles given the same time as the winner, won the Long Jump with 4.54 and then threw the Shot Put out to 7.06 winning the B string a magnificent performance competing with a plaster over her injured wrist.

Bryony Evans won her first race over 75 metres and achieved a new PB of 11.3 she then went onto win the B Long Jump with 4.08 and 2nd in the A Javelin with another PB of 24.86.

Olivia Barrett ran a new PB in the B Hurdles with 15.3 and recorded 2.44.6 at 800 metres. Ellie Sheppard won the Shot with 7.44, second in the High Jump with 1.20 and the 75 metres with 11.3.

Sophie Brown scored good points in all her three events and helped the relay team to win again coming second in both the High Jump and Javelin B Strings with 1.15 and 10.85 respectively and 6th in the A 150 in 23.6.
