Injured Mansfield star Vincent back with a bang

Mansfield powerlifting star John Vincent was back with a bang at the British Championships after overcoming a serious injury that threatened to end his career.

The 2013 world champion was sidelined for a year after needing surgery to connect his bicep to the bone.

But at Coventry Butts Arena, he broke the British and World record with a 235kg deadlift at 73kg- over three times his own bodyweight .

Vincent, who trains at Angels Gym and is sponsored by JP 4x4 of Skegby and Coun Stephen Garner, said: “I couldn’t have done it without the help and expert coaching of Andy Ward, who is also three times world champion and record holder and inspired me to do better.

“It was a good eight months before I could start light training as the arm was in a cast for the first two months, and it was a full year of recovery before I could get back into full training.

“It feels great to be back at the top as I nearly retired, but Andy Ward put me through strict orders and am now British deadlift champ and hold the British and world record of 235 kg.

“I tore my arm in the English Championships trying to lift the same weight of 235kg.

“The pain was horrendous and I had a good three months not being able to straighten my arm. Andy Ward’s belief and motivation made me stick at it and come back stronger.”

Also competing on the day was another of Andrew Ward’s lifters - Andrew Palethorpe of Sutton - who also broke a British record with a 280kg deadlift in the 110kg class.

Both lifters are now preparing for the European and World Championships at Limmerick in Ireland in November.
