Heartbreak for Potter as England lose in semi-final

There was heartache for Mansfield Woodhouse’s Jo Potter on Wednesday night as England were beaten in the semi-finals of the Women’s World Cup.

Potter was an unused substitute and could only look on in horror as Laura Bassett’s injury-time own goal handed a 2-1 victory to Japan.

The Birmingham City star made just one substitute appearance in Canada during the 2-1 win over Colombia.

Two penalties saw the sides go in level 1-1 at half-time in Wednesday’s game, Fara Williams’ effort cancelling out that of Aya Miyama.

But just as it looked as if extra-time was going to be required, Bassett’s attempt to clear the danger from a Japan attack saw the ball loop over goalkeeper Karen Bardsley and hit the underside of the crossbar before dropping just over the line.
