Hat-trick of Southwell wins for Beasley

Southwell hosted another all-weather fixture this week, and the star of the show was most certainly young apprentice rider Connor Beasley, who had three winners on the card for three different trainers.

The first leg of the treble came in the second race of the day, a five furlong median auction maiden for two-year-olds in which he rode Mecca’s Mirage to a narrow victory for Michael Dods from the newcomer Quint, who ran a race full of promise in second for Martyn Meade.

Mecca’s Mirage is owned by David Metcalfe, who also owns Mecca’s Angel, the two-year-old course record holder here over five furlongs and a very good filly.

His second winner came aboard the locally-trained Kingaroo, who is trained by Garry Woodward just outside Newark.

This was an incredible ride because Kingaroo likes to make the running normally, but was taken on up front and relegated to third last turning out of the back straight and with Connor pushing and shoving away for a response.

But once they straightened for home, he duly took off and nailed K Lightning right on the line for his seventh course win.

Finally, Connor rode Shades Of Silk to a more than comfortable victory in the three-year-old handicap over six furlongs, fairly scampering away inside the final furlong to win really nicely, and suggesting she could follow up here again soon.

The feature race of the day, however, was a fillies handicap, once again over six furlongs, and with favourite Patrona Ciana disappointing, it allowed Abi Scarlet to win at the track for the sixth time under seven pound claimer Charlie Bennett, who gave her a smashing ride.

Amateur riders were given a chance to show their skills in the opener, with an amateur riders handicap over a mile and six furlongs, and on his first ride at the track, young Kaine Wood really excelled, steering Dynastic to another win on Fibresand for Norton-based Tony Coyle to beat off some top amateurs such as Simon Walker and Serena Brotherton.

Jockey Dale Swift landed the last two races on the card with wins on both Sam Spade, for Derek Shaw, and Repetition, who bolted up for trainer Kristin Stubbs in the finale.

Southwell host three days racing back-to-back on the 3rd, 4th and 5th June, for more details, visit www.southwell-racecourse.co.uk.
