Harriers quartet prepare for English Schools meet

A quartet of Mansfield Harriers athletes are preparing themselves for one of the biggest events in the calendar this weekend - the English Schools Athletics Championships at the Alexander Stadium Birmingham.

The event is the fourth biggest athletics event in the world and is held annually.

Four Harriers have made the Notts team this year and with inter and senior boys’ pre-race 1500-metre medal prospects unavailable it will be some of the club’s next generation of stars who will be in the limelight.

Leading the way will be debutant Jessica Lake in the junior girls’ long jump. Lake has had a superb summer, scoring huge points for the club in league fixtures throughout the year.

She started the season primarily as a high hurdler and however her jump has improved so significantly this has become her premier event. She will be going into the event with a personal best and club record of 5.28 metres.

Kelsey Pearce is an outstanding field eventer specialising in the throws and another debutant at the event. Her specialist discipline is the shot, competing in the junior girls competition and earlier in the year came away with a bronze medal at the indoor national championships. Pearce has launched the shot out to 11.76 metres this year which is also a new club record.

Libby Coleman runs in the inter-girls 3000-metre event on a rare appearance on the track. Coleman is an exceptional triathlete, who competes for GB in the European Championships later this month, and who will be looking to use her undoubted strength to force a very high position in the race and improve her current best time of 9.58.01.
