Goals galore as Selston start with a win and a loss

At Matlock, the opening exchanges were well balanced, but on six minutes, following a back pass from James Travis, Selston winger Sean Gregory chased down to nip in ahead of the on rushing Martin Dewberry to put the away side into the lead.

Selston then went 2-0 up on 20 minutes and again it was Gregory who this time made a fine run down the right and finished in style.

Matlock then settled down and some good pressure paid off on 24 minutes as following some good work from Jack Bradshaw on the right, Dave Edge reduced the arrears.

Three minutes later after some great work from Marcus Beddoe it was Edge in again with lethal finishing to make the score 2-2.

Edge nearly put Matlock in front on 29 minutes but it was Selston who would regain the lead when a free-kick into the box was knocked down and Carl Moore was unmarked to score.

The hosts battled hard to get level before the break and got their rewards on the stroke of half-time when a short free-kick just outside the box saw Jack Siddall roll the ball to Alex Hewitt who hit a superb strike into the bottom right hand corner.

Matlock began the second-half well and after Jake Ball had saved well from Beddoe, Siddall beat two defenders and fired into the top corner to make it 4-3.

The momentum was now with the Gladiators and following a Siddall corner it was Beddoe who rose up to head home and make it 5-3.

Joe Riley’s fine effort set up a grandstand finish, but Matlock held on to secure the win.

On Tuesday, Selston went to Collingham and ran out 4-1 winners.

Gregory put Selston in front from the penalty spot six minutes in after Wayne Cooke had been fouled, Cooke then netting the second on 51 minutes after Aaron Brady’s knock down.

Riley made it three on 62 after his header from a free-kick had been parried, and although Collingham got a late consolation, Steven Smith ran onto Cooke’s flick to make it 4-1 in the dying moments.
