Wrens’ new pair embark on relegation battle

The Evo-Stik League Division One South club had parted company with Dean Short by mutual consent, after Short had stepped into the breach following the resignation of Scott Rickards just before the start of the season.

But a return of just one point from four league games and exits from two cup competitions meant that the club had to act quickly before the catch-up requirement became too great.

In the new management duo, the club believe they have found the people who can turn results around.

In fact the pair, who played together at Alfreton Town during the Reds’ climb up the system, have an impressive record of pulling up clubs in crisis by the roots on low budgets, having already done so at both Hucknall Town and Grantham Town.

And they wasted no time in recruiting several new players who they believe are capable of stepping up to the mark and turning the Wrens’ fortunes.

Speaking after their first training session on Thursday night, Sucharewycz enthused: “Rainworth have a fantastic set up for this level of football so we are hoping to attract some good players who will, first of all, keep us in this division, and then go on from there.

“We took over at Hucknall Town when they were in a crisis situation and were starting to turn their results around until the money dried up altogether, then we moved on to Grantham with the remit to keep them in the Premier Division, which we did, but unfortunately we weren’t then given the chance to carry out the next phase of our plans there the following season.”

Reflecting on the training session, Robinson added: “It’s gone well with a lot of new lads introduced, including a couple of young professionals on a month’s loan from Notts County, while the lads who were already here have wanted to impress us too.

“It gave us food for thought regarding our team selection for Saturday because they couldn’t all play, although everyone including the lads who were already here will get their chance. But the club couldn’t keep going as it had been.”

Sucharewycz ended: “It’s like a new pre-season for the club with players learning to gel, but while that will need time, one thing we can have from day one is that everyone takes responsibility on the pitch, all are leaders in their own right, and everyone shows the work rate and commitment required, because that can take us a long way even while players are getting to know one another.”

The new look side, with 10 debutants - two of them from the bench - may have lost 2-1 to a very good Chasetown outfit, but the supporters went home in a much happier frame of mind, in the belief that the club now has the capability of climbing away from the foot of the table.
