Wrens aim to get back on track

Joint boss Gary Sucharewicz was in philosophical mood after Rainworth MW came unstuck at Gresley on Saturday.

But the Wrens’ co-manager is looking to his side to start another mini-run when they take on Romulus in their next Evo-Stik League Division One South fixture at Kirklington Road this weekend.

Romulus went above Rainworth on goal difference after last Saturday’s results, but on Monday they lost 4-1 at home to a rampant Gresley side who had beaten Rainworth 4-2 two days earlier, thereby denying the Wrens a third successive win for the first time since October 2012.

Rainworth had been forced to field some ‘walking wounded’ in the match at Gresley, but still had their noses in front at half-time when a superb strike by Grant Ryan and a clinical punishment of a defensive error by Alex Ford overturned the Moatmen’s early lead.

But Gresley turned on a powerful second half show to finish comfortable winners, leaving Sucherwicz to bemoan to poor goals conceded.

He said: “We just found ourselves stretched a little bit too far. The successes that we have had so far have come despite having to make two or three changes every match, and when we have done this everyone has stepped up to the plate and done the job they have been given.

“We’ve asked a lot of the players in the three weeks we have been here and at Gresley we identified one or two lessons that we need to learn. Of the four goals conceded, two were bad ones to give away.

“To be fair, our defence had been top drawer until then, but a couple of errors led to a couple of goals conceded which, if they had not been, would have seen us coming away from there with something to show - and the lads do realise that.

“This week we will have had the chance to train properly for pretty much the first time since our arrival day after having played two games a week. So we hope that during this week’s training we have sorted out and corrected what we did wrong.”

Rainworth introduced new striker Alex Houghton from Grantham Town part way through the second half for the injured Ford, and there was more good news in the Wrens’ camp with Walsall confirming that young goalkeeper Liam Roberts has had his loan extended by a further month, this after he was named man of the match at Gresley.

Sucharewicz is hoping to extend the loan of Notts County defender Brad McGowan too, but added that there was some negotiation to be carried out to achieve this.

If he does return to Meadow Lane his last appearance will be this weekend, but he has certainly made a good impression on the Welfare fans.
