Manager Adam Murray said: “It’s a massive thing for this football club [to have an U21s side]. The youth team are flying and we have some excellent young kids, but the gap between the youth team and the first team is massive.

“We’ve had a couple of real good boys with us [in the first team squad] this season; the likes of Cain Smith, Zayn Hakeem and Tom Marriott, but the step is huge [to the senior side].

“Having the U21s will allow us to keep some of the U18s for an extra year or two and give them an education as well.

“They’ll be entered into a reserve league and it’s a major step for our club, there won’t be many others [clubs] at our level doing this.”
