VIDEO: LOMAS ON STAGS BLOG: Murray adds H-bombs to his attacking arsenal

After the double coup of signing stiker Danny Rose and centre half George Taft, Stags followed that up this week with the arrival of wingers Ashley Hemmings and CJ Hamilton.

Boss Adam Murray is set to have a holiday, but he is far more likely to be worried about getting water splashed onto his lap-top poolside by someone doing belly flops than how well his suntan is coming along.

He still needs a right back and a centre forward, plus possibly another player, to wrap things up and is working flat out. So sun lotion won’t be holding him back from doing his business and Murray is not someone capable of switching off.

With Taft in the building I am less upset by the final departure of Ryan Tafazolli to Peterborough United where we wish him all the very best.

But I am already genuinely excited by the arrival of wing duo Hemmings and Hamilton – the two H-bombs?

I can remember being impressed by Hemmings in the game at Dagenham last season and looking at the compilation video of some of his best moments, he looks a great addition.

As I have said before I love wingers and, although I’ve never seen him play, the way that Murray spoke about CJ on his arrival this week had me on the edge of my seat before he’d even taken on a defender.

Described as a speed machine, but with intelligence, Murray said he felt the lad could follow in the footsteps of Sam Clucas and go as high as he wanted – rich praise indeed.

Wingers are such enigmas and can sometimes be a waste of a shirt when their crosses are inaccurate or they fail to track back and leave their side outnumbered.

But, on form, they can be a club’s most deadly weapon – look at John Robertson in Forest’s glory years.

Stags have had some fine wingers, none more so than Wayne Corden on his day.

It was a shame to see Matty Blair leave as I think Doncaster will benefit from all the hard work we’ve done to get him fit again next season.

Last season Blair showed glimpses here and there, as did Reggie Lambe, who at least chipped in with some important goals too during his time with the club.

But neither really made it count when played out wide, though were sometimes asked to play different roles by a manager looking for his best shape.

Junior Daniel’s return on loan saw him fail to do enough to be asked back, his best game coming at home to Barnet as an emergency right back.

So the manager has had to go elsewhere.

If Murray can now pull in a big target man to get on the end of their crosses, he could have a very good Plan A or B to go with his more defensive strategies.

How Stags line up in their first home game will be fascinating for fans who were annoyed by their side’s safety-first home formations for the first chunk of the season.

Too many games were drawn at home early doors. Indeed, Stags drew four of the first six and only won three of their 12 home games leading up the New Year.

After that they won four of their last 11 – vital points dropped that ultimately proved so costly in a season in which their away form was so good.

This year home form and Stags’ ability to get at opponents has to improve if the play-off bid is to be sustained and I believe Murray’s new H-bombs could hold the key!
