Two wins out of two for Teversal

This was a trip into the unknown for both sides as Hull United are in their inaugural season in the NCEL in only the second season in existence, and made a successful start on Saturday in their League campaign with a 1-0 win at Yorkshire Amateurs.

Teversal’s impressive start, winning 2-0 at home against Knaresborough Town on Saturday, added to the ingredients to make it an interesting encounter.

The game started off with both sides playing entertaining football and it was clear why the well organised visitors had a League and Cup double and a County Cup final appearance last season.

As the game settled down, Teversal keeper Sheppard came racing out of his penalty area with it clear he was second favourite in the race with United’s striker Richardson. So it was fortuitous the custodian’s mistimed challenge didn’t catch Richardson, otherwise he could have forced the referee into a game-changing decision.

Credit also to the Hull striker for staying on his feet and firing an effort from a tight angle that nestled in the sidenetting to the relief of the Tevie camp.

On the quarter of an hour mark the hosts created the first real opening when Vincent and McCann worked a throw-in drill that saw Vincent with the time and space to send a cross to the far post that found Cox, but the midfielder could only guide his effort over the bar.

Hull created their first opening of note after half an hour when a Kinsley free kick found Piercy to head down to Richardson, whose scrambled effort went high and wide.

It was a free kick that led to the Tevie Boys opening the scoring when the well-worked set piece from Vincent found Dawson’s timely run to head home to make it 1-0 on 33 minutes.

The fillip of the goal saw the home side take control of the remainder of the half without turning it into goals.

The final effort of the half came from Cockerill with a fierce effort from 25 yards that saw Dobson happy to get behind the ball to save and then grasp it at the second attempt.

Hull made some changes at the break, bringing on Agnew and Playford for Tennant and Hill and after the initial five minutes, started to sway the game back to a more even encounter.

Then Start was also introduced for Bennett and virtually immediately a long punt from Dobson sent the sub clear to slide an effort past the advancing Sheppard but also the outside of the far post.

Just after the hour mark the home side nearly doubled their lead when Cox’s searching cross found Cockerill, who powered a header marginally wide.

Hull were not to be outdone and Trammer delivered a cross for Agnew to head back into the path of McNamara, whose weak effort went wide of the mark.

The game moved into the final stages and became a bit scrappy as Teversal looked to close it out by slowing things down, with a couple of issues leading to yellow cards being issued.

The final goalmouth action came from the home side when Vincent’s cross found Cox at the far post again and, like his first half effort, he could only guide the effort over bar.

This was a good advert for the Northern Counties East League Cup and the reward is a bye into the third round for Teversal.

More importantly they have made some new friends in Hull United, who are a club who are clearly going places.

Praise must go to match officials Josh Bramall, John Stevens and Tony Tierney for their excellent performances too.
