Top scorer signs new deal with AFC Mansfield

Toolstation NCEL top scorer Ross Duggan said it would have been “stupid” to leave AFC Mansfield, as he signed a new deal to remain with the Bulls for at least another year.

The talisman bagged an incredible 34 goals in just 32 AFC appearances last season, taking the league by storm after moving from South Yorkshire side Maltby Main.

His top moments in the red jersey so far include a five-star, five-goal performance against Sleaford in a 7-0 FA Cup victory, and netting a 120th-minute FA Vase winner over Hanley Town amongst many other truly memorable strikes.

“I really enjoyed it last season and I performed so well, so if it isn't broke don't fix it,” Duggan said

“I definitely exceeded my expectations last season, but I wasn't to know what I could do when playing regularly considering it hadn't happened before.

“Who knows, hopefully I can match last season at the least.”

A spectacular goal-scoring season brought back tonnes of confidence for Duggan, who had his manager to thank for giving him his opportunity after what proved to be a frustrating spell during his time at Maltby Main.

“He had faith in me, which is what I needed,” he said, “and I've definitely got my confidence back - there's nothing worse than not being able to prove yourself.

“All the management team and everyone at the club played a part in it as well, so I've got them all to thank.”

Feeling at home also proved to be a vital factor in his success in Forest Town so far, according to Duggan, who went on to mention club Chairman Andrew Saunders.

“I really get on with the Chairman, to be honest – he’s a really nice bloke and I can always rely on him so it’s nice to have a good relationship with him.

“In general I’ve just loved my time at AFC so far, it’s full of good people and that’s all you can ask for. I really feel at home.”

The striker is eagerly looking forward to what will hopefully be an even more successful year for the Bulls, although he kept modest about his predictions: “I think we'll do really well next season, we just need a few additions and a better start than last season and we'll be fine.

“The wait is absolutely killing me, I can't wait to get back into it and hopefully carry on where I left off.”
