Tom leaves it ‘Leight’ for South Normanton

Tom Leighton scored a dramatic late winner for South Normanton Athletic on the road at Radcliffe Olympic in the EMCL Premier.

The game started off at double quick speed with the visitors’ keeper Steve Smith called in to action to pull off a crucial stop with his feet to keep it level.

It proved to be a pivotal contribution as South Normanton would take the lead just before the half-hour mark through Ash Whitt from close range, Ant Fay’s cross.

It was going to take something special to beat Smith and so it was to be when Liam Smallwood unleashed a thunderous strike that hit the bar and bounced over the line.

A scruffy game ensued and it took until three minutes from the 90 when a left wing cross in to the box found Whitt, he turned and fed Leighton to fire in to the corner.

The three points for South Normanton moved them up the table and in to eighth position ahead of a mouth watering clash on Saturday (February 28) at table topping Ellistown and Ibstock.
