Teversal win tainted by late replies

Teversal’s 5-3 win against struggling Louth Town in only their third home game in 2014 was tainted by three goals in the last nine minutes for the 10-men visitors.

Nevertheless, Teversal’s win followed up an impressive 3-2 midweek away success at AFC Emley.

The home side picked up the pattern of play that they employed successfully at Emley to dominate the early exchanges and it took only seven minutes to open their account for afternoon.

A patient build up saw Lee Townsend play a well-weighted pass to Burrell, who fired home with an assured finish.

Two minutes later it could have been 2-0 when Jordan Jones slightly overhit a through ball that Dickinson didn’t give up on, and when Thompson in the visitors’ goal spilled what look an easier task to gather the ball, the Teversal skipper laid it into Burrell, whose effort was saved on the line by Walden to save his keeper’s blushes.

On 20 minutes, though, it was 2-0. This time Robinson was found by another well-weighted through ball from Townsend, the wide man taking the ball in his stride before rounding Thompson with the Louth custodian catching Robinson, leaving the referee the easiest of penalties to award. Burrell stepped up and wrong-footed Thompson as he humbly passed the ball into the net.

Credit to Louth as they kept their heads up and created a couple of notable opportunities, but the best of the first period efforts came midway through the half when Armstrong’s corner was misjudged by Brooks in the home goal. The ball ran across the empty goal, wanting a simple tap in, but it went past the far post before Smith smashed his effort into the sidenetting.

The second half started with the referee having to take action when Armstrong put a reckless challenge in on Brad Cox and, having already received a needless yellow in the first half, he received a second yellow followed by the compulsory red, leaving the visitors with an even bigger task to get back into the game.

Sean Dickinson again demonstrated his never-say-attitude and earned a bit of luck when he chased what looked another lost cause, before sliding to smash the ball against the corner flag for it to bounce back in play, allowing the diminutive midfielder to find space before crossing to Burrell, who had two attempts at snatching his hat-trick, but was denied by a Thompson save and then a block by a Louth defender.

On 66 minutes the lead was expanded to 3-0 when Jay Ashley picked up the ball from a neat passing move and the full back smashed an effort past the stranded Thompson from 19 yards out.

A minute later Rocky Townsend rounded off an excellent performance with a goal when he timed his run perfectly to slot home Ricky Starbuck’s excellent through ball to make it 4-0.

Teversal were in total command at this point, with Triston Burrell having numerous opportunities to crown his polished performance with a hat-trick, but wasted opportunities failed to put an even more convincing scoreline on the board.

On 78 minutes Louth’s luck took another turn for the worse when another neat passing move put Burrell through on goal. As the striker was shaping to finish, Twigge made a last ditch challenge but only put the ball past his advancing keeper to make it 5-0.

It was looking good for Teveral with 12 minutes to play, but three Louth goals in the last nine minutes really tainted the Tevie Boys’ otherwise positive display and reduced their winning margin to a level that would cost them the opportunity to move up a place to 12th in the table.

The first goal came on 81 minutes when Twigge converted a corner with a delicate finish that looped into the corner of the net from a corner to cancel out his own goal.

Two minutes later it was Ashley’s turn to score an own goal, his attempted block to deny Croft’s goal-bound effort ending up in the bottom corner, leaving Brooks no chance.

In the 89th minute the costly goal for the hosts was conceded when Frazer Chapman raced into the penalty to unleash a well-struck effort that Brooks saved superbly, but the rebound fell to Chapman to smash home at the second attempt and make it 5-3.

The drama was over and Louth left thinking what could have been had there been longer left to play while Teversal were left ruing missed chances.

Teversal are again on the road tomorrow (Tuesday) to face Grimsby Borough with a 7.45pm kick-off, then on Saturday they are again on the road to face Knaresborough Town with a 3pm kick-off. Both games are in the Toolstation Northern Counties East League Division One.
