Teversal slump to surprise defeat to hit FA Cup hopes

In a game that will quickly vanish from the memory, Teversal stumbled to a surprise 2-0 home defeat in the first of their Easter weekend matches in the First Division of the Toolstation Northern Counties East League on Saturday.

Teversal were hoping to pick up maximum points from the two matches, which were both against sides below them in the table. But West Yorkshire outfit Glasshoughton Welfare raided Carnarvon Street for a 2-0 victory that inflicted a further blow to the home side’s hopes of finishing high enough in the league to qualify for the FA Cup next season.

“The FA Cup dream now looks like being unfulfilled,” said secretary Kev Newton. “The big question is whether we will let a season that has shown so much improvement and brought back some belief fade away to a disappointing conclusion. Or will we show some character and finish with the pride we have shown for most of the season?”

Glasshoughton played with a strong wind at their backs in the opening half, and launched wave after wave of attacks. They took the lead in the 15th minute when a through ball by Ashley Scothern found Kris Fawcett, who went down under a needless, rash challenge from Luke Fisher. Referee Ashley Royston had an easy decision to make in pointing to the spot, from where Josh Morley calmly slotted home.

Scothern headed over when he should have doubled the lead, and Teversal’s toils increased when they lost Brad Cox to a suspected broken nose after a collision of heads.

Glasshoughton also lost ‘keeper Mark Suttle, who had to be taken to hospital with an injury sustained late in the half, but his replacement, Josh Archer, had little to do as the hosts failed to launch a recovery in the second period. Indeed the game was killed as early as the 63rd minute when a speculative effort by Ryan Poskitt held up in the wind, swerved and bounced to beat unfortunate ‘keeper Dale Sheppard. The last 27 minutes were torture for Teversal fans, who endured one of their side’s lowest points of the campaign.
