An 87th minute strike by Danny Rose stole victory over their play-off rivals as Stags came from behind to win it and Evans said: “In other games we’ve not got what we deserved and today we perhaps got two more points than we did deserve.“

“It was a great win though it wasn’t such a great performance.

“But we were fantastic against Luton and didn’t win and we played reasonably well at Accrington and lost in the 94th minute.

“I don’t think either team deserved to win that today and I don’t think either team deserved to lose it.

“On my way home I am going to buy a tin of paint from B&Q, paint the wall and watch it dry because it might be better than watching that game again.”

He continued “I think Cambridge were much better than us in the first half.

“But I think we found some energy levels in the second half and the subs made a big impact.

“There is no better feeling in football than when Danny Rose scored and made it 2-1.

“This game is a results business as we know. Perhaps a draw is a fair result today, but we’ll take the three points.”

Stags were in big trouble once they went behind in the second half, having created few chances. But Evans said: “We’ve got character in the dressing room which comes from the coaching staff. Once we scored I wasn’t in any doubt we’d win the game.

“We didn’t seem to be able to get a foothold in the game until the penalty. But, for me, the turning point was Jacob Mellis starting to pass the ball. He was only on the pitch 15 seconds and he’d played Kane Hemmings in on a run at their goal – a fantastic sliderule pass.
