STAGS RETRO: The day The Terriers were sent packing from the FA Cup

There are two major links between Mansfield Town and Huddersfield Town.

The second, of course, is the now best-forgotten Stags’ Third Division play-off final defeat in a penalty shoot-out after the infamous goal-that-never-was by Colin Larkin.

Larkin’s tap-in from Laurent D’Jaffo’s cross was ruled out because the linesman said the ball crossed the goalline -— something TV replays failed to prove.

The first link was Ian Greaves — the manager who led Mansfield Town to Wembley glory 30 yeaers ago and who took Huddersfield into the top tier of English football in the early 1970s.

That feat will be remembered in August when the Terriers return to the top flight for the first time since.

But this photo is from 1976 when the Stags knocked Huddersfield out of the FA Cup in a first round replay.

Arch marksmen at that time Kevin Randall and Terry Eccles scored the second-half goals to clinch the win and a place in the second round.

Randall converted a Jimmy McCaffrey cross from the left before Eccles (right) rode three tackles to score.

Non-league Matlock Town dumped the Stags out in the next round.
