Stags' oldest ex-player signs for club's new Dementia Group

Mansfield Town's oldest living former player has been at the heart of the launch of a Dementia Group at the club.

Walter Edwards, who is 94, has been a regular at meetings of the group, which is aimed at rekindling sporting memories and tackling loneliness among the elderly.

Edwards, who was born and bred in Mansfield, signed for the Stags in 1947 and scored five goals in 25 matches before moving on to Leeds United and then enjoying spells at Leicester City and Rochdale.

The group, which meets every Friday morning, has been set up by Mansfield Town Football In The Community, with help from Nottinghamshire County Council.

The idea partly stemmed from the shocking revelation that many former footballers are now living with dementia, including two of the best players in Stags’ history, Kevin Bird and Ernie Moss.

Anyone with dementia can go along, maybe with their carers, put the kettle on and enjoy a sociable get-together.
