The drastic move came with the club unable to come to a suitable agreement over a lease at home ground The Fieldings that would enable them to get promoted in the future, which is a league requirement.

A club spokesman said: “Due to the fact that Mansfield Hosiery Mills were unable to give an acceptable agreement to Sutton Town AFC to comply with league and FA requirements on tenure of the ground to compete at Step 6 of the pyramid, Sutton Town have had no alternative but to resign from the East Midland Counties League.”

Manager Dean Short resigned at the end of last season in May.

The club now have the option of trying to join another league which would allow them to continue at The Fieldings, but the problem would remain that the Snipes would not be eligible for promotion under the terms of their current lease.
