SJR Worksop lose in front of bumper crowd but ladies team start season with a win

An injury hit SJR Worksop slipped to a 3-1 defeat to Dinnington Town in front of a bumper crowd of 180.

The hosts made a good start - despite missing nine senior players - and hit the front thanks to an own goal.

Ben Brown nearly made it 2-0 following a great save by the keeper.

But two quick goals from Cameron Evans and Jordan Turner turned the game on its head.

Jamie Hopkins pounced early in the second half to wrap it up for Town.

SJR nearly pulled a goal back through Jaden Thackery (17) in the closing stages.

The SJR side featured a number of youngsters with Luke Morris (16), and Ryan Hurcombe (20) also making the step up to first team level.

But the ladies team ensured it wasn’t a double defeat for the club following a 2-1 win at Cleethorpes Town in their opening league game of the season.

The home team took a third minute lead when Charlotte Soar volleyed home from a corner.

Brooke Chapell fire a free-kick over on ten minutes after Sky Hughes was fouled.

Sky-Lily Hughes drew SJR level on 25 minutes following a solo run.

Cleethorpes started the second half strongly and thought that they had taken the lead on 49 minutes when a long throw bounced over everybody into the net.

It was chalked off after the referee deemed that no player had touched the ball.

SJR keeper Chloe Rose pulled off a couple of fine saves to deny the hosts.

And the visitors made the saves count when Sophie Vickers made the most of a defensive blunder.

But the game became marred by a lengthy stoppage as SJR's Sophie Vickers following a knee injury which needed hospital treatment.

There was another lengthy stoppage when a Cleethorpes player collapsed on the pitch with what appeared to be delayed concussion and she too eventually departed to hospital.

Both sides had chances when play eventually resumed and Cleethorpes could well have equalised but SJR managed to hang on and grind out a deserved victory.

Next Sunday SJR are back on home turf when they entertain Grimsby Borough.
