Shirebrook Town beat Pontefract Collieries to progress into next round of League Cup

Shirebrook Town came from a goal behind to thump three second half goals past hosts Pontefract Collieries and book their place in the next round of the League Cup.

Shirebrook rested six key players ahead of Saturday’s tough Vase tie away at North West Counties Division One side Atherton Laburnum Rovers, and Josh Corbett gave Pontefract a 1-0 half time lead on 37 minutes at The Beechnut Lane Stadium on Wednesday night.

Shirebrook hit back soon after the restart when Simon Johnson levelled the scores on 52 minutes, before Danny Wiltshire put the visitors in front minutes later.

And Matthew Thompson sealed the win with the visitors’ third goal right on the stroke of full time.

Shirebrook’s reward is a First Round home tie against Division One rivals Worsbrough Bridge Athletic next month, and the winner of that game will travel to Premier Division side Pickering Town in the following round.
