Shirebrook up to fourth place in Division One

Shirebrook Town extended their unbeaten run to nine games in NCEL Division One on Saturday, with a 2-0 win at Westella VIP.

Jake Currie put the visitors in to an early lead after six minutes and Liam Greenfield doubled it to make sure of the points ten minutes from time.

There was one change from the previous week for Shirebrook as Billy Wright made his debut.

Shirebrook started the game on the front foot and got their rewards when Greenfield’s cross found Currie who made no mistake from six yards out. Their rhythm was disrupted, however, when a freak hail storm forced the players off the pitch, causing a ten-minute delay.

The match resumed and Shirebrook continued where they had left off. Greenfield, Johnson, Currie and Ord all tested the keeper. Hargreaves hit the bar.

The away side went in at the break one-up and again saw plenty of the ball in the second half, creating chances but failing to take them.

It took until the 80th-minute when Josh Gibson’s burst in to the box saw him pulled back and from the resulting penalty kick the game was safe.

Greenfield’s spot kick was saved well by the Westella keeper but the same player was first to react and made no mistake second time around.

The win sees Shirebrook up to fourth in the table ahead of Saturday’s home game against an ever-improving Winterton Rangers who beat second-placed AFC Mansfield 4-1 to move up to 17th.

Leaders Hemsworth Miners Welfare are now five points clear after a 5-2 home win over Selby Town and Bottesford Town are eight points behind top spot after their 2-0 win at home to Hallam. There were four goals for Bradley Walker as Knaresborough Town, in ninth, thrashed their hosts and the team just below them in the standings, Yorkshire Amateur, 6-0.

Basement side Lincoln Moorlands Railway’s revival continues as they won 3-1 at home to Rossington Main, Josh Schofield with two of their goals, but they are ten points away from safety with ten games to play.
