Shirebrook force replay with Sheffield

Shirebrook were the superior side both in terms of possession and chances in the first half and came off deservedly 1-0 to the good thanks to Danny Bacon’s 31st minute strike.

Sheffield changed things in the second half and decided to go more direct to inject some pace and direction. This paid off and the pressure told on the hour mark. A Warren Burrell free kick was helped on by Cooksey where Mark Fereday was credited with the last touch.

Following the goal the game reached a hiatus for a while before Shirebrook began to look more threatening for the last quarter.

The game ultimately finished 1-1 after a stonewall handball penalty decision had been denied by the referee following good Shirebrook pressure and Dickinson missed a guilt edge opportunity in the dying minutes for Shirebrook.

A spell of pressure saw Cooksey and Andy Gascoigne go close but Sheffield were thankful to Rob Poulter’s fine late save to deny the visitors victory.

On a comical note the police were called following a stewarding row and then footballing matters got heated at full-time when the Sheffield manager refused to shake hands with his Shirebrook opposite number.

The sides were due to replay at Langwith Road last night.

This Saturday they head for Hallam in the FA Carlsberg Vase first qualifying round.
