A nervy first 25 minutes saw the young Gladiators take control and play some good passing football, creating a number of chances, and this paid off as they took the lead after 15 minutes through Josh Waldron.

Going a goal down seemed to inspire Sherwood as they took control of the final 20 minutes of the first half and got their reward after 42 minutes when the referee pointed to the spot for a hand ball in the area by a Matlock defender.

Liam Theakstone stepped up to take the penalty only for it to be saved by the keeper, the ball hitting his knee and falling to Danny Williams who sent the ball into the net for the equaliser to send the teams in level at half time.

The second-half started as the first finished with Wayne Savage’s team taking control from kick off and playing some good football.

The attacking style of play created a number of chances before Williams scored his second of the game on 62 minutes with a shot which beat the keeper and went in off the right hand post to give Sherwood the lead.

The second goal all but killed off Matlock’s young team and on 77 minutes some neat attacking play allowed Liam Green to make enough space to shoot from just inside the area to send the ball into the top corner out of reach of the keeper to give Sherwood a 3-1 lead and the points were secure.

Sherwood host champions Selston this weekend.

August 20th Sherwood are home to last seasons league champions Selston in what will be a cracking game of football.
