A cold rainy day and heavy pitch could not dampen the excitement of having football back in front of a large crowd.

Sherwood welcomed new signing Will Norcross and the returning Gaz Curtis to the squad.

Captain Jobe Shaw missed the game due to illness, dropping to the bench. His place taken by Ewan Robson.

Sherwood started brightly, Tim Gregory almost finding Liam Hearn with a low cross.

The opening goal came in the seventh minute, Hearn’s cross field ball picking out Gregory this time, his shot finding its way into the net via an unlucky deflection off a home defender.

While always a threat going forward Sherwood were having some difficulties at the other end of the pitch with some sloppy defending giving the lively home attack and midfield some encouragement.

And the home side were desperately unlucky not to be awarded a penalty kick in the 16th minute.

Josh Turton in the Wood goal seemed to collide with the home forward but the referee waived away the frantic appeals.

The rest of the half saw some enterprising play by Shirebrook almost rewarded with a goal following a defensive mix up.

At the other end The Wood were not quite finding their range with the final ball although Gregory, Jamie York and Ethan Wiesztort all had efforts going close.

The second half saw Colliery take the game to the visitors from the kick-off.

Playing with more pace and purpose with Norcross, York and Lewis Belgrave now dominating the midfield and the forward line of Gregory, Hearn and the impressive Kieran Wells much more prevalent the half was pretty much one way traffic.

The second goal came in the 51st minute, Charlie Taylor nodding home at the far post.

The best goal of the afternoon came on the 63rd minute. A back to front move involving Wiesztort and a neat one-two between Hearn and Wells ended with Hearn lifting the ball over the keeper to make it 3-0.

Further opportunities came and went and but for a couple of offside decisions and some excellent last ditch defending The Wood could have added more goals.
