Sherwood Colliery come from behind to beat Kimberley

The Wood starting XI saw one change with Ricky Starbuck in for Joe Lumley.

The opening exchanges belonged exclusively to the young visitors who started brightly.

A golden chance was spurned as early as the third minute with a header placed wide with the goal gaping after Josh Turton had made a good save.

Liam Hearn had Sherwood’s first shot on goal, but it was tame and straight at the keeper.

Kimberley continued to press forward, Jobe Shaw made a magnificent clearing header, which was replicated by fellow centre back Charlie Taylor as The Wood struggled to settle.

The opening goal came from the resulting corner kick, Sam Parker finishing with some style at the near post to give Kimberley a deserved lead.

The goal seemed to spark Sherwood into life, Hearn had an effort saved while Carter Widdowson put a free kick wide of the post and gradually The Wood started to get to grips with conditions and their opponents as half time was reached.

The second half saw the home side look much sharper from the kick off.

The midfield now were dominating the ball in forward areas and pressure started to mount on the visiting defence.

The equalising goal looked inevitable and it duly arrived in the 56th minute. Widdowson provided a deep cross to the back post which Taylor met with a towering header back across goal and into the net.

The home side were now irresistible going forward and looking dangerous at every opportunity, with Tim Gregory continuing his fine form with Kieran Wells having an increasing influence on the game.

Hearn drew a foul as he turned in the penalty area and the referee pointed to the spot. Wells duly dispatched the spot kick to put Sherwood in front with 62 minutes gone.

The pressure was relentless and only three minutes later Ricky Starbuck was upended in the area with another penalty kick the inevitable outcome.

That man Wells stepped up to send the keeper the wrong way to effectively seal the game.

The visitors battled resolutely to keep The Wood at bay, and Hearn saw a great effort pushed around the post as the Kimberley goal led a charmed life.

Sherwood now look ahead to the FA Vase second qualifying round on Saturday when Aylestone Park are the visitors.
