Selston FC are a source of inspiration for Kimberley

Kimberley boss Ant Ward believes Selston are a perfect example of what his side could achieve.

The Parishioners won the East Midlands Counties League Premier Division two seasons ago, despite having no budget to pay players.

And Ward says it gives Kimberley inspiration at what can be achieved with the right structure in place.

“We know we are never going to be on a level playing field in this division because we have no budget,” he said.

“We have got to rely on what we got. We speak about Selston all the time and what they have done.

“It is about keeping a team together year on year. It is very easy for managers to change players and bring new ones in, but if you can get an honest group of lads who are loyal then the Selston model is really one you can aspire to.

“Just because you have loads of money it does not mean you are going to win the league. Their model is one we still look at and think it is a great model.

“We just want to compete as best as we can, with no budget that is all we can ask.

“If we had a bigger budget, or a good budget, we would be looking for a lot higher.

“But to replicate what we achieved last season is where we would want to start off at.”

Discussions with new targets has begun with Ward hopeful, but not counting his chickens, that he can strengthen his squad.

He added: “We have just started talking to lads about next season and it looks promising, but I’ll never say anything until it’s all signed and in with the league.

“There are a lot of lads at this level that you think you might have and don’t have when the new season kicks off.”
