Robinson praise as depleted Wrens take off

Joint manager Ian Robinson was full of praise for Rainworth MW’s depleted side after they recorded back to back wins for the first time this season on Tuesday night.

Despite several absentees cutting the Wrens’ available squad to the bone, and restricting them to naming only three substitutes for their Evo-Stik League Division One South game at Stocksbridge Park Steels, they ran out 2-0 winners in the face of a second half blitz by the South Yorkshire outfit, thanks to a masterful defensive display which blunted the Steels’ cutting edge.

The victory came hot on the heels of Saturday’s 4-3 success against Market Drayton Town, and was Rainworth’s third in the five games since Robinson and co-manager Gary Sucharewycz took charge at Kirklington Road, the nine points gained lifting them off the foot and into mid-table.

Tuesday’s win did come at a cost, though, with Alex Ford (groin) and Theo Brown (knee) the most serious casualties, along with Tommy Hannigan (thigh), but not before Brown had been involved in the build up and Ford had scored the first goal.

Robinson had no doubt that Stocksbridge dictated most of the play on the night but, speaking after the match, said: “It was all about remaining disciplined in the face of their pressure. In fact, despite it all, we created the better chances and we made sure we kept a shape which was hard for them to break down.

“Sometimes, going away from home, you have to play professionally, and the lads did their job of defending as a unit really well, hit them on the break for the second goal, and then saw the game out in a professional manner.

“We were a few players light through injury, illness, family and work commitments, but that’s something you have to live with in semi-professional football, and the lads we’ve had out tonight have put in a good shift and will no doubt know about it tomorrow.”

Looking forward to Saturday’s difficult trip to Gresley, Robinson added: “Yes, they’ll be a big test for us, they all are, and there are no easy games.

“Some will have looked at us and thought that we were an easy turn-over, but we are well on the way to recovery, confidence is high, and whoever we put our trust in to do the job on Saturday will go out and play in the way we think we can get a result.

“We’ve got a good set of lads together, those who were already here and the 11 or 12 we have brought in.

“There will be one or two more additions to come because we’re looking to improve things all the time, but the lads are showing us that there’s not that much that we need to do.”
