Relief as Teversal progress in Senior Cup

They went into the tricky tie hoping to improve on their dismal results in the County’s Senior Cup competition, which has seen them fail to get past the third round since they won the cup in 2003.

Teversal were made to wait until Aiden Harris scored on 68 minutes before they opened the scoring after great goalkeeping by Lewis Soar had kept the scores level.

Danny Plumbe doubled that advantage 10 minutes later, before Attenborough scored late on to set up a tense finish.

Said Simpson: “We played some great football and made hard work of getting the right result. We had more than enough chances to kill the game off in the first half, but their goalkeeper had a great game keeping us out on numerous occasions with point blank saves in the first half.

“The scoreline should have been more, but it’s a win and that’s all that counts. We progress to the next round and take the positives from the game to next week’s local derby against high-flyers Shirebrook.”

It wasn’t until after 10 minutes that the first goalscoring opportunity of note came along when a Teversal break saw Cox hit the post after beating Soar in the home goal.

If Soar had a bit of luck in keeping a clean sheet with that initial effort, he produced a superb performance to deny the Tevie Boys with string of superb saves to keep his side in the game.

One of his best saves came on 18 minutes when a patient build up by the visitors ended when the ball dropped to Atkins, who produced a textbook volley that was denied by a full stretch save at the bottom corner of the goal.

A minute later Vincent sent Weaver clear with an inch-perfect ball, but the young winger delayed enough to allow Soar to make himself big and make another excellent save.

Attenborough created an opening on 24 when Beldham’s effort from 20 yards forced Dye into a routine save.

On the half-hour mark, Teversal had a penalty claim turned down when Pursglove played into Cockerill’s feet for the striker to go down under the challenge of Mrvik.

Only a few minutes later Cockerill became the provider when he released Pursglove, but again Soar was quick off his line to make an excellent save.

The goalkeeper’s performance was becoming an inspiration for the home side and Teversal’s frustrations grew.

Teversal had their second penalty claim turned down as McGowen appeared to be holding Cockerill.

On the hour mark Parkes unleashed a speculative effort from 20 yards from which Soar again made an excellent save, but couldn’t hold on it before Richards blocked the follow up from Weaver.

The goal that the Tevie Boys deserved finally came on 68 minutes when another patient passing move finally saw the ball reaching Harris, who fired home.

The visitors’ efforts deserved a bit of luck and the second goal on 78 minutes was a little lucky when Cockerill’s mis-hit effort fell to Plumbe, who doubled the visitors’ lead.

The host managed to nick a consolation goal on 89 minutes when Mrvik, who had been moved up to hit the visitors on the break, clinically fired home from 18 yards.

Next up for Teversal is a local derby with a trip to face Shirebrook Town on Saturday with a 3pm kick off in the Toolstation Northern Counties East League Division One.
