Wrens manager Richard Smith wanted to thank the club for their generosity. He said: “We mentioned the idea to the chairman last Saturday and since then I’ve been overwhelmed with the reaction of the committee and players who have all chucked in their own money for this to happen, it just goes to show what a great club we have.

“A special thanks also goes to Barlow’s Butchers for their generous donations of food.”

Barlow’s Butchers in Kirkby in Ashfield have donated hotdog buns and sausages to the club to help feed the local children.

Smith continued: “Whilst we can all debate to the cows come home whose responsibility it is to feed kids, the fact is that it’s never the kids’ fault and we just need to get them fed.

“We’ve always believed that the football club should be a big part of the local community and if we can do our little bit to help, then we absolutely will.

“Most of us are either very local or have grown up in mining backgrounds where we look after one another and you never know, maybe one of these kids will grow up to be a future Wrens favourite.”
