Rainworth MW looked like a side that had forgotten how to win as they were further dragged into the Evo-Stik NPL Division One South relegation mire by a 2-1 home defeat by Stocksbridge Park Steels on Saturday.
It was a game neither side could afford to lose and, while Rainworth had their chances, they failed to capitalise on them.
A moment that was typical of the season so far, saw poor Rainworth defending leave Lee Garside through on goal on 15 minutes. He made the most of the opportunity and slotted the ball into the far corner.
However, just as Rainworth looked like they had forgotten how to score, from Gino Kelleher’s corner, Ford headed on and Romaine Graham was on hand to smash the ball home for the equaliser three minutes from the break.
Rainworth looked the more likely to score after the break, but the ball just wouldn’t go in and they had a warning in the 74th minute when Garside’s header just flashed past the far post.
The warning wasn’t heeded as, from a free kick, Garside found himself free and he made no mistake heading it into the far corner on 76 minutes.
Rainworth knew they were in a relegation battle before the match, now they know the tag ‘relegation possibles’ has become ‘relegation probables’.
