The EMCFL league is currently suspended with the Wrens having played just 10 of their scheduled 38 fixtures so far this season.

“I think it will be a couple of months at least before we can think about playing and then it's what happens then,” he said.

“Last year was hard on the teams that should have got promoted, like Sherwood, Eastwood, Dunkirk and Heanor.

“I don’t think anyone would have denied them going up, it's just how are they going to do it this year?

“Are they going to scrap it totally?, which I think would be the wrong thing to do. Are they going to play each other once, are they going to have a mini-league? It is hard to say.

“There is no way we will play 38 games though, there is not a chance.”

NHS worker Smith is also all too aware that the club must now make sure the mental welfare of everyone connected with the club is looked after.

“It is one of those things we all expected was coming and needs to happen, it’s just how it affects individuals,” he said.

“The lads are going to be hit by this in a mental way and it is really difficult to get the balance right between the well-being of the nation and the mental side of what football gives to people.

“In the previous lockdown we could do certain things but this time we can’t really do much. We just have to make sure the lads are ok.

“It’s also trying to keep them active with runs and physical work.”
