Perfect pre-season forthe new-look Cobras

New-look Clipstone FC will kick-off their first season in the East Midlands Counties League on the back of a terrific pre-season.

The Cobras have remained unbeaten all summer, completing the warm-up programme with a 2-0 win over a Mansfield Town under-21 and youth side and a 2-1 success over a Chesterfield XI.

Goalkeeper and coach Gav Saxby said: “Pre-season has been really positive.

“We are a new group after a difficult season — a new management team and a new set of players, and the way the players have bonded has been fantastic.”

Ahead of the league season opener at Kimberley, under-21s manager Steve Smith said: “We have prepared for it as much as we can and go into it in really good shape.”

The Cobras’ goalscorers against Chesterfield were Mark Carter, from a third-minute corner, and Solly Limb, who made it 2-0 after 66 minutes.

Saxby added: “It was another fantastic performance against a very strong, fit and organised side.

“We asked the lads to keep their shape, as they did against Mansfield, and they did it tremendously.

“We scored two great goals.”

Smith said: “We built on what we have achieved.”
