Nottingham Forest defender Kelvin Wilson looks to build on Rotherham United win against Charlton Athletic

Wilson said “The games come thick and fast in this league and we are looking forward to playing Charlton now.”

Charlton head into the game off the back of a strong start to the season, having convincingly beaten relegated QPR on the opening weekend an following up with a highly credible draw at well-fancied Derby County on Saturday.

“We want to build on this win. If we perform to the best of our ability and get another win now, we can only look ahead.”

Forest got their season up and running at the weekend after disappointing defeats to Brighton and Walsall continued a worrying trend of results that began at the latter end of the previous campaign.

Wilson - who missed the final three games of 2014/15 through suspension - was keen to banish those memories, stating “The end to last season is in the past and we need to be able to look at it that way. We are just looking at the next game now and looking to start a little positive run. That is all we are thinking about.”

Former Celtic man Wilson was also pressed about the competition for places in the squad. “If you are good enough, the gaffer will play you,” Wilson said. “He has proved that. And the lads he has brought into the side have shown that they are good enough to be there. Tyler was brilliant at the back end of last season and Twisty (Oliver Burke) has been superb in training. He has great pace and is showing what he can do in games now.

“The young lads who aren’t playing yet; who are waiting for their chance in the side need to look at that and see what is possible” - a point that resonates in the current climate following injury to Robert Tesche and uncertainty over the futures of both Henri Lansbury and Saturday’s match-winner Michail Antonio.”

Wilson commented on Saturday’s performance, with his thoughts exuding a sense of relief at gaining the club’s first 3 points of the Championship season.

“We are just pleased to get the first win of the season, because it is always unnerving when you lose your first game.

“The second half was better than the first for us, but we were just pleased to get the win.

“There are no easy sides to play in the Championship, but Rotherham are a particularly difficult side to face. There was always the chance a former player would return to haunt us, given how many there are in their side.

“That was the case with Danny (Collins), when he scored their goal – and it was a good header, even if we could have done better defending it. But take your hat off to the boys, because we dug in and got the result that we wanted.”
