EVO-STIK NPL Rainworth MW made a pleasing start to the build-up for the coming Division One South season on Tuesday night with a 5-0 success at Clay Cross Town.

Goals came from Stephen Akers (2), Ricky Hanson, Sam West and Callum Lloyd, and although the opposition came from three leagues below, the Wrens’ passing football delighted their following.

Now they are looking forward to their first two home games, when two former Rainworth managers will be returning to Kirklington Road.

First, on Saturday (3pm) ex-reserve team boss Micky Taylor will bring his newly-formed AFC Mansfield who will be playing their first ever game, and then on Tuesday Rudy Funk, who masterminded the Wrens’ rise from Central Midlands football to their present level, brings his high-profile Scarborough Athletic, with whom Rainnworth had an intense but friendly rivalry during their three seasons in the Northern Counties East League.

Looking back on the Clay Cross game, Wrens boss Kevin Gee said: “We were looking to create chances, score goals, keep a clean sheet, and remain injury free, and all four boxes were ticked.

“Circumstances dictate that we have to look for quality rather than quantity ion terms of our squad, but I would rather work with a small squad than have to let several players down each week when they don’t figure – although you do need a bit of luck in keeping free of injury.

“We have been working hard in training, and I believe the squad as a whole are much fitter than at the same stage last year, and what was particularly pleasing was that when we changed things around nothing changed on the field, we continued to create chances all the way through.”

Early bird ticket deadline looms

Rainworth fans intending to buy a season ticket are reminded that they have only until Monday 16th to qualify for the ‘early bird’ discounted rate of £75 with £50 concessions.

There has been a good take-up of ‘early bird’ tickets, but from Tuesday onwards the normal season ticket price of £100 and £60 will apply, although U16s can acquire their ticket at any time for just £10.

Season tickets represent a huge saving on pay at the gate prices over a season, but the ‘early bird’ offer allows the chance to save even more.
