Alfreton again proved pundits wrong and will continue to do so after a spectacular comeback against Gateshead which saw them score three goals in 13 minutes.
After a dismal first half display it was evident that Nicky Law still has many areas upon which the team can improve on but on a positive note the fight back made it clearer that Alfreton have heart and grit, the steeliness to get results when the game isn’t going your way, this has been vital to staying in the Conference this season and will continue to be important long into the future.
Taking nothing away from the team, the second half from Alfreton was quality football, we saw Jordan Rose make great attacking strides up-field, presumably making up for conceding the penalty 5 minutes before the break, Ben Tomlinson looked energetic and pressured the Gateshead defence into making mistakes and giving away possession and upon this, Alfreton capitalized, Tomlinson scored a header from 6 yards, Steven Hewitt from Burnley took his chance and buried his effort into the bottom corner and Scott Boden showed his instinctive poaching ability when his header won the game in stoppage time.
Alfreton travel away to Braintree next Saturday, surely a win there would cement their place in the Blue Square Premier for next season if it isn’t already, and plant more confidence into the already adacious squad that Nicky Law has at his disposal.
They will go into a tough game in which the physicality of football will be tested rather than technical ability, however Alfreton have done this time and again this season, Alfreton should, with the result at the weekend.
