SOUTH Normanton Athletic gave their supporters plenty of cause for optimism as they overcame UniBond Division One South club Gresley Rovers in Tuesday night's away pre-season friendly.
The Shiners took control with two early goals and although Gresley got one back before half time, Athletic restored their two goal cushion in the second half, before the Moatmen got one back late on.
In a match where both sides made several substitutions - indeed Gresley fielded 20 players through the match - South Normanton included Tom Baker from Long Eaton United, and Vladimir Santos Farrell who looks likely to return to Lees Lane after moving to Shirebrook Town midway through last season.
It took Athletic just seven minutes to burst into the lead. Adam Newton pinpointed a precise through ball to Kevin Mabon who slid it astutely past the Gresley keeper from 12 yards.
Then midway through the half Farrell showed why he is such a crowd pleaser when he took on and beat two players before striking the ball into the top corner.
Gresley got one back before half time, and it remained at 2-1 until the best goal of the night in the 75th minute, Brett Adams’ 23-yard screamer at the end of a three man move, before Gresley wrapped up the scoring with a late second goal.
