Substitute Ollie Clarke’s 31st-minute equaliser cancelled out Lincoln loanee Max Melbourne’s debut goal on a bitterly cold evening at the Bescot Stadium.

Despite failing to extend their winning streak, Nigel Clough's charges are unbeaten in seven league games.

The game played out in bitterly cold conditions with the kick-off brought forward by 15 minutes at late notice in order to minimise chances of the pitch becoming frozen.

“I'm delighted with a point, having gone behind to a poorish goal from our point of view,” Clough said during a post match interview with BBC Radio Nottingham.

“We got back in the game with a very good goal. Chances were at premium because of the conditions.

“The pitch was getting a bit more bobbly and dangerous as the game went on with the temperature dropping.

“We tried to start as early as we could because of the weather so we kicked off 15 minutes earlier. Walsall did brilliantly to get the game on.

“The ref was great and was sensible all night. That, coupled with two honest teams out there, is why the game was on.

“I think it took us a while to get going but I thought the second half of the first half we were good and we were very good in the first 15-20 minutes of the second half.

“We missed the outstanding chance of the second half through Jordan Bowery, he just couldn’t quite finish off a good move.

“You can lose a game easily in those conditions, it is a good point.

“We are delighted to have Ollie Clarke back. He scored a very good goal.”

It was the first time Stags had played in 17 days since their 1-0 win at Southend United

Stags travel to Colchester United this weekend with George Lapslie set to face around four weeks on the sidelines after picking up a hamstring injury at Walsall.
