Alfreton Town boss Nicky Law says he is happy with the response from his players despite the Easter Monday defeat to promotion-chasing Grimsby Town.

The Reds were beaten 2-0 at home, but Law was happy with the big improvement from the 4-0 thumping at Wrexham two days earlier.

Said Law: “I think the best team has won. We have got to hold our hands up, but the one thing for me today was that we got a response from Saturday.

“Saturday was a disgusting performance, but we came here today and showed a bit of pride and spirit and it was chalk and cheese. We just didn’t turn up at Wrexham.

“We have come up against a good side (Grimsby). It was a fortuitous first goal they got with a bit of a ricochet. I thought we were coming in to it then and we were unlucky in some ways.

“I am disappointed in the two goals we have given away but we have come up against a very good side. We have given a good account of ourselves and that is all we can really ask of ourselves (in the circumstances).

“You have got to hold your hands up, but at the end of the day they have got that little bit more quality.

“We realise we have got three very tough games left but we are sat with a six-point cushion and we will have to wait and see.”

Following a pointless Easter period, the Reds still sit six points clear of the drop zone but know that if Welling United win their game in hand and come to Derbyshire and win a week on Saturday, Alfreton will be in major trouble going into the last game of the season at title-chasing Bristol Rovers as Welling also have a better goal difference.

That scenario puts more pressure on Nicky Law’s side for their trip south this Saturday to face Eastleigh who still have a very good chance of claiming a play-off spot.

The Reds won the first encounter against the Spitfires 3-2 back on December 10 but know they are in for another tight game in deepest Hampshire.

Law admits it is tough for the club at this level . He ended: “It is a challenge every week for us, but I am sure the lads will go to the end and we will give it all we have got.

“If we stay in the league that will be fantastic, if we don’t, then we go again” ended Law.
