Alfreton Town manager Nicky Law felt his side fully deserved their point from the 1-1 home draw against league leaders Barnet on Saturday.

It looked like the Reds would be facing defeat until Bradley Wood fired home a penalty four minutes in to injury time to give the relegation-threatened side a vital point.

Said Law: “I don’t think we deserved to have lost that game, that was the least we deserved out of the game.

“You can see why they are where they are, they are big, they are strong, very direct. They are playing for that long throw. We switched off once and it cost us. Other than that, I think they had a couple of half-chances, John Akinde has had a good turn and a shot but big Jason (Mooney) has saved that, but other than that, against the league leaders,I don’t think we were in too much danger.

“I said at half time I felt we needed to go and push on and play five yards further up the pitch which the strong wind enabled us to do so, and just believe in ourselves a bit more and I think we did that second half.

“When we got the penalty, I don’t know who has given it away but it is an absolutely ridiculous tackle to make. Joe Leesley is six yards away from goal, going away from goal, never going to get the ball back into the box from that angle but the lad brings him down thankfully for us.

“We will take it and as I says, I don’t think it was any more than we deserved.

“I don’t want to take too much away from our lads but whatever team Barnet put out it is going to be a good side. They are a full time football club, they are top of this league and they are 40 points difference from us. They are a proper football team, they have got proper footballers. They have got a centre forward there that we had last year that everyone said was no good. He has gone there and scored 30 goals.

“He hasn’t scored today but they are a real threat and you can see why they are where they are and, as I say, give our lads credit, I think they have done well.”

Law was also pleased with the response from the disappointing display in the goalless draw against Dartford in midweek. “I think we are making progress when we are disappointed with nil-nil as we were on Tuesday night.

“I was critical after the performance on Tuesday. I thought it was an opportunity wasted, not in terms of chances created but I felt we had a real chance, we had them down in the corner but let them get back up.

“I think we bounced back today and showed great character and it went well for us today.

“We have proven we can give anybody a game at this level and have taken a deserved point off the leaders.”
