New Stags striker wants the taste of promotion again

Although admitting it was a wrench to leave Gigg Lane, the 22-year-old, who joined Stags for an undisclosed fee yesterday, felt he needed regular football and said Mansfield Town didn’t need any selling to him, despite interest from other League One clubs.

“It’s a good club and I’m delighted to be here,” he said.

“After the season finished I got a text saying Mansfield are interested in you, from there on in it was my decision – and I think I’ve made the right decision in coming.

“I moved from Barnsley to Bury and I’ve had a couple of full seasons there. But I’ve been on the bench a lot and it’s been frustrating really.

“I want to get a first team spot here and play games really. I’d like to play week in, week out, score a few goals and contribute to the team and, hopefully, push towards promotion. I also want to develop myself as a player.

“I have some good memories of Bury, getting promotion, and I’ve met some good people. But that’s football. I’ve got to get on with it and hopefully meet some great people here and carry on next season.”

Rose continued: “It didn’t need much selling – I’ve seen Mansfield in the past.

“I’ve played against them once, I’ve been here with Bury and they were a good team when we played them.

“Last season, they did really well, unfortunately they didn’t get the play-offs but hopefully next season we can get right up there.”

Born in Barnsley, Rose scored five goals in 28 appearances for the Shakers last season and, describing his playing attributes, said: “I like to work hard for the team, hopefully put a few goals in, but it’s a team game really and as long as we get the three points on a Saturday, that’s all that matters.

“I like to run in behind a lot, get in the box as often as I can – that’s where the goals come from – I’ll be mainly in the box, waiting for the ball to come in and hopefully put it in the back of the net.”

He is certainly no stranger to League Two and hopes the team spirit at the One Call Stadium will match that of the Bury side he helped reach League One two season ago.

“I have played in League Two before with Bury,” he said. “We got promotion and it was a good season. I’d like next season to be much of the same.

“We had a great team spirit. It was a long season and it went right down to the wire and the team spirit got us through.

“Hopefully it will be done before the last day of the season this time, get in the play-offs and see where we are. I’m hoping that we can have a successful season.”

Rose will also find a familiar face or two in the dressing room during pre-season.

“I played with ‘Jens’ (Brian Jensen) the keeper, he was at Bury when I was there,” he said.

“Lee Collins, the skipper here I believe, I played with him at Barnsley - that’s the only people I know here but I’ll get to know them and that’ll be fine.”
